Our commitment to exceptional railway performance is evident across all roles, diesel engine mechanics to railway car technicians, electricians, locomotive attendants, and general workers. Each team member is devoted to upholding quality and adhering to safety and trade regulations. They operate our trains, troubleshoot issues with our rolling stock, oversee yard movements, and maintain the cleanliness of our cars. Their efforts are crucial in delivering reliable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly service to over four million travelers each year.
Diesel engine mechanic
Our diesel engine mechanics ensure that engines achieve the best time to destination, in the safest way possible. Their specialization and our inspection program enable them to determine the causes and solutions to mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic issues. Their vigilance helps us continually surpass Transport Canada’s standards.
With a wide range of locomotives and passenger cars, there is always something to do around the clock. Our mechanics proactively maintain or repair mechanical issues on our railway equipment to ensure the safety of our passengers and crew. They may be called upon to do light repairs (chairs, door systems, etc.) or heavy ones (changing wheels, trucks, etc.)
With patience and a strong problem-solving ability, our safety-minded team of electricians maintains and services our locomotives and passenger cars. They have the overall responsibilities of all our electrical equipment, including lighting and HVAC systems. They are able to interpret electrical or electronic drawings and determine wiring layouts in addition to using a variety of specialized equipment.
This team of skilled yard workers is equipped to handle year-round, all-weather tasks and varying work hours. They oversee the operations of our extensive fleet of locomotives and trains at our cutting-edge maintenance facilities. Their unified focus is on safety.
Our general workers ensure that VIA Rail’s standards are met by maintaining everything in pristine condition. They create a tidy, healthy, and welcoming environment for our customers by carefully attending to both the interior and exterior of our passenger cars.
