Reporting to the Specialist Director, Commodity taxation, the Advisor prepares and files the various declarations and reports in the required delays. They assist the Specialist Director for governmental and externals audits. They review the documentation to ensure the accuracy of sales tax codification in the various departments of the Corporation. They prepare the journal entries relating to sales taxes. They analyse and interpret commodity and motive fuel tax statutes and regulations. They also assist the Specialist Director in various tasks and special projects (review contracts, implements procedures, tracking of statistics).
Responsibilities:
- Perform tax researches. Analyze and interpret commodity and motive fuel tax statutes and regulations. Simplify these for users with less tax knowledge. Provides on-going support to corporate users on a variety of taxation issues;
- Review tax exemption documentation to verify that all required information is present and ensure that all exemptions are properly documented. Train the various users and propose process improvements in order to reduce the risk for the Company;
- Autonomously and timely completes and produce returns to different levels of governments (GST/HST/QST/PST, fuel and carbon taxes, pension plan tax);
- Assist the Specialist Director for governmental and externals audits. Follow-up on commodity tax practice after audits and works jointly with user to ensure their implementation;
- Review supplier and customer contracts on an on-going basis and make recommendations to ensure Via’s compliance with all federal and provincial tax laws. Recommend tax clauses for VIA’s various agreements;
- Assist the Specialist Director with special projects He/she helps the Specialist in the context of special projects (analyzes, documents, and provides the tax rules (commodity tax) to be implemented in the context of special projects, participates in testing before go-live of new systems.
Requirements:
- Bachelor degree in Commerce (Accounting or Finance) with 5 years of experience in a large corporation in sales tax compliance;
- Master’s degree in taxation or commodity tax is an asset;
- Knowledge of Canadian commodity tax laws (including pension plans) and regulation and knowledge of provincial sales taxes, fuel and carbon tax laws;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and advanced functions of Microsoft Excel;
- Experience with Oracle financial system is an asset.
