Reporting to the TSSSA Director, the RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) engineer is focused on monitoring to ensure that systems operate reliably and safely by continuously tracking their performance. This role involves collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and potential issues, developing key performance indicators (KPIs), and generating reports to inform stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to maintain high standards of system reliability and safety, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and supporting the overall business needs, by working collaboratively with system’s engineers and warranty team.

Responsibilities:

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Gather and analyze data related to fleet’s performance, reliability, and safety (failure data, maintenance records, operational data, etc.);
  • Clean, validate and compile available data;
  • Correlate CMMIS, Wi-tronix, Railigent data;
  • Create preliminary technical dossier to be shared with system’s engineer;
  • Identify trends and potential issues;
  • Categorize data into its respective systems;
  • Link technical defect mapping with ongoing contractual topics.

Performance monitoring

  • Continuously monitor the performance of the systems to ensure they meet reliability, availability and safety specifications/standards;
  • Identify top 10 drivers per its respective category (Delay, system, passenger impacted, safety, etc.);
  • Create alert on the reliability system for latent/ potential and systemic defect;
  • Perform Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) assessments.

KPI development and reporting

  • Develop and implement key performance indicators to track and improve system performance;
  • Manage KPIs to ensure continuous improvement are being made and monitor the efficiency of the latest technical modification implemented by supplier;
  • Establish fly-forward models;
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, reliability models and recommendations;
  • Create dashboards to overview fleet’s performance (Work collaboratively with BI team to expedite dashboards creation by both groups).

Governance & cross teams

  • Lead the internal reliability monthly meeting;
  • Participate in technical meetings to gather information;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, operations, maintenance, and quality assurance;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with supplier and other external / internal parties to ensure the reliability of each system;
  • Work together with system’s engineers to ensure a comprehensive technical dossier is created for each defect.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or a related technical field;
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in reliability engineering, preferably within the railway or transportation industry (a combination of experience and education may be considered);
  • Practical background: experience and motivation to work in shop and maintenance environment to:
    • Understand and evaluate inspection and repair procedure effectiveness and compliance
    • Gather pertinent feedback from maintenance and operations staff
    • Perform fleetwide verifications and measurements on VIA’s rolling stock.

Competencies:

  • Excellent written and verbal proficiency in both official languages (English/French);
  • Proficiency in reliability analysis tools and methodologies such as FMEA, RAM analysis, fault tree analysis (FTA), and root cause analysis (RCA);
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with the capacity to analyze complex technical data and implement effective solutions;
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting technical reports and interacting with both internal teams and external stakeholders;
  • Proficiency in using reporting tools and coding (e.g. PowerBI, SQL, Python);
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage resources, timelines, and priorities;
  • Results-driven with a focus on quality and operational excellence;
  • Detail-oriented and committed to safety, reliability, and long-term performance;
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
