POSITION

Ensures that the management of the environmental impacts of VIA’s activities is integrated into the corporate and departmental processes.  Develop, implement and continuously improve the environmental management system and processes, methods and plans related to environmental risk management.  Provides coaching to senior management in the implementation of corporate and departmental processes. Conducts audits and other assessments to ensure compliance to applicable laws, regulations and processes and to measure effectiveness. Oversee preparedness and response to environmental incidents. Measures and report on environmental performance. Support the development and implementation of a sustainability program.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and manages the corporate environmental management system (EMS) processes and programs to effectively identify, manage and control environmental impacts of the operations. Maintains the EMS and ISO certifications in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and standards. Provides coaching to senior management on the development and implementation of departmental processes to ensure conformance with the corporate EMS.  Develop environmental training and ensure that it remains adequate and sufficient. Monitors industry leading and best management practices and recommends changes required to continuously improve the EMS;
  • Develops and manages the audit program. Plans, coordinates and conducts audits to ensure compliance of the EMS with environmental legislation and ISO standards, and to ensure conformance of the corporation to the EMS processes and programs.  Ensures the effectiveness of the EMS through analyses and evaluations of processes and programs. Reports results along with recommendations to senior management. Manages an integrated corporate process to ensure compliance with changes to all environmental and safety laws and regulations.  Provides support to the departments in the interpretation and implementation of applicable laws and regulations;
  • Ensures new environmental risks, activities, and procedures are in compliance with and are integrated into VIA’s EMS. Provides support and advice in the control and reduction of environmental impacts and in the development of corporate environmental objectives, targets and performance measures. Supports the corporation in diagnosing needs resulting from monitoring activities and environmental incidents and makes appropriate recommendations. Provides subject matter expertise, advice and guidance in environmental risk assessment and the prevention and management of incidents;
  • Measures and analyses trends in environmental performance and lead the development of corrective action plans, oversees implementation and monitors for effectiveness. Support the development and implementation of a sustainability program. Execute the sustainability program and provide reports on performance to both internal and external audiences. Leads/participates in the development of the environment section of the Sustainability strategy and plan;
  • Represents VIA in liaison with government agencies (Environment Canada, Transport Canada, etc.) and the Railway Association of Canada.

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Hold a university degree in Environment, Risk Management or related field;
  • Proven experience (8 to 10 years) in environmental risk management or in a similar role within a company of comparable size and scope;
  • Strong understanding of environmental management concepts, methodologies, and frameworks (e.g., ISO 14001);
  • Holding or being prepared to obtain Management System Auditor Certification;
  • Knowledge of regulations applicable to environmental risk management;
  • Excellent written and verbal proficiency in both official languages (English/French);
  • Must be willing to undertake occasional travel;
  • Ability to work in a team, establish professional relationships, and collaborate with various stakeholders;
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, identify solutions, and make effective decisions;
  • Constant willingness to improve quality and deepen knowledge in the field of expertise;
  • Ability to understand and integrate specific knowledge related to the field of activity (mechanical and electrical systems);
  • Systemic approach and competence in the effective analysis of reports, with an ability to communicate appropriately at all hierarchical levels;
  • Ability to exert positive influence, motivate, and guide others;
  • Ability to efficiently manage time, establish priorities, and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
