As a Senior Project Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the Safety and reliability of VIA Rail’s Legacy fleet. This is more than a project management position; it’s an opportunity to lead transformative initiatives that directly impact customer experience and operational excellence across Canada’s passenger rail network.

In this role, you will be accountable for end-to-end delivery, including developing robust business cases, managing costs and forecasts, mitigating risks, planning in detail, overseeing procurement and contract execution, and ensuring quality assurance.

The Senior Project Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineering, production, and procurement experts, and monitor progress to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient rolling stock equipment.

Your leadership will ensure VIA Rail’s fleet remains efficient, supporting sustainable transportation and enhancing the passenger experience for millions of Canadians.

Initiate the project:

  • Conduct preliminary risk assessments to identify potential challenges and mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and financial forecasts to support investment decisions.
  • Define project scope with engineering, success criteria, and key performance indicators.
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement to validate needs, expectations, and business priorities.

 

Executing the project:

  • Lead and facilitate key project meetings, including gate reviews, project kick-offs, core team sessions, production readiness reviews, and contractor coordination meetings.
  •  Monitor and control the project budget in collaboration with the project controller, ensuring accurate financial tracking and consolidated forecasting.
  • Update and consolidate the project schedule with the master planner, ensuring alignment with execution milestones and resource availability.
  • Monitor and ensure timely delivery of project and contract deliverables, including documentation, equipment, and services.

 

Ending the project

  • Ensure the initial requirements are met.
  • Archives all important documentation.

  

Governance and communication:

  • Manage stakeholder relationships by ensuring clear, consistent, and proactive communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly project reports, including financial status, schedule updates, risk assessments, and progress against key milestones.
  • Plan and lead quality and performance review sessions (Gate Review) to mark major program milestones.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of project management experience in operations or transportation; a combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of rolling stock and revenue management (strong asset).
  • Solid understanding of financial principles.
  • Proven experience managing projects involving multifunctional teams and working within a matrix organization.
  • PMP certification required.
  • Practical expertise in project management tools and methodologies; familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint, EPM 2010, and Project Online is an asset.
  • Bilingual in English and French (oral and written) is essential.
