Reporting to the Engineering Director, acts as the reference regarding rolling stock electrical & controls engineering support for the EM teams for the legacy fleet. Guides the Technical Services (TS) teams to ensure harmonization and standardization of best practices and processes, material selection, regulation compliance as well as for requirement development and adherence verification during projects related to all electrical equipment and controls software. Will utilize his/her expertise and experience to balance steer the Engineering teams’ efforts to balance operational needs with workloads and priorities. Lead through influence as this role does not have direct reports attributed. Promote communication, transparency, and professionalism.

Responsibilities: 

 

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE TO EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS

  • Provides expertise to support EM across all maintenance centers in the execution of maintenance and/or product improvement implementations for all rolling stock electrical components and controls software for the entirety of the Via Rail legacy fleet;
  • Participates and supports meetings, calls, and initiatives pertaining to maintenance and development of electrical engineering projects to ensure quality and consistency of rolling stock equipment.

 

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE TO ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

  • Provides technical, operational guidance and oversight to Specialists, Technical Advisors and maintenance center management;
  • Responsible for aligning the initiatives and projects with respects to VIA Rail’s needs and objectives;
  • Monitors the impact of changes to the Maintenance Program and startup of the overhaul program and recommends changes;
  • Approval all electrical/software documentation released by specialists.

 

REPRESENT TECHNICAL SERVICES

  • Representing Technical Services in engagements with VIA Rail stakeholders, ensuring seamless communication and coordination within the context of initiatives, plans, crisis management, and strategic planning.

 

DEFINE NEW PROJECTS

  • Supports the Design Engineering initiatives by providing guidance and expertise in the development of the scope of work and associated design reviews;
  • Support H&S issues that involve E.M;
  • Follow-up with committee(s) on progress of issues.

 

EXECUTE ENGINEERING TASKS

  • Execute Electrical work package as required on different projects

 

IMPROVE DEPARTMENT EFFICENCY

  • Assist Engineering Director in identifying and implement initiatives to increase department efficiency

 

Requirement:

 

  • University diploma in Electrical engineering discipline or equivalent;
  • 10+ years experience within the Rail industry (or similar) with regards to rolling stock electrical components, control software development and corresponding regulation ;
  • Member of the OIQ;
  • Understanding of and capability of balancing short terms needs with long term planning;
  • Strong aptitude in troubleshooting equipment failures and performing root cause analysis;
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Solid decision-making skills and the ability to coach and lead through influence;
  • Must be self-motivated and able to perform under minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Experience leading team in a matricial organisation;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word and Excel;
  • Bilingual (English and French).
