As Technical Director – LDRR Cars, you will take the lead on all engineering activities for LDRR cars and drive a major project alongside a strong multidisciplinary team.

From the final stage of the bidding process through to full delivery, you will ensure technical compliance and seamless integration of systems, guaranteeing interoperability with both new and existing equipment. Acting as the primary engineering authority, you will work closely with the supplier, internal and external stakeholders, and play a key role in strategic decisions that will shape the success of the project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact for the LDRR cars project with internal stakeholders and the supplier.
  • Ensure car designs meet technical and regulatory requirements (Transport Canada, host railways).
  • Communicate and enforce VIA Rail guidelines with suppliers and external consultants.
  • Participate in defining interfaces with maintenance, infrastructure, and operations.
  • Support qualification testing and the commissioning process.

 

Technical Leadership and Expertise

  • Lead a technical team within a matrix organization from project launch through warranty completion.
  • Coordinate review and approval of design stages (documentation, testing tools, and validation) for LDRR car systems.
  • Work closely with the supplier on key decisions and optimize design in collaboration with service and operations teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight to external stakeholders (design and construction, operations and services, TSSSA team, commercial and legal teams).

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or equivalent.
  • Member of the OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec).
  • 15 years of experience in technical management and systems engineering.
  • Over 5 years in the rail industry, including experience in procuring new equipment.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence and make strategic decisions.
  • Solid knowledge of design standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with locomotive systems (propulsion, braking, control, etc.).
  • Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in TEAMS, SharePoint, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Bilingual (French and English).
  • Willingness to travel 4 to 6 weeks per year.
