The Opportunity

We are currently seeking Locomotive Engineers for our Toronto terminal, serving the Central Ontario region.

This safety‑critical position plays a key role in the customer experience, as you are responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of our passengers and onboard crews while adhering to established schedules.

Training is expected to begin in April 2026.


Your Responsibilities

Operate in Strict Compliance

  • Operate trains to the highest standards of professionalism.
  • Maintain full mastery of the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) and VIA Rail’s special instructions, applying them rigorously at all times.
  • Place safety at the forefront of every action.

Manage Multiple Tasks in a Dynamic Environment

  • Maintain strong spatial and geographical awareness.
  • Analyze and process a high volume of information.
  • Reprioritize as needed while applying rules accurately and efficiently at high speeds.

Collaborate Continuously

  • Communicate effectively with crew members, rail traffic controllers, and VIA’s Operations Control Centre.
  • Ensure smooth coordination to support safe and efficient operations.

Maintain Continuous Knowledge Updates

  • Stay current on procedures, regulatory changes, and special instructions related to the CROR and VIA Rail operations.

Demonstrate a Customer‑Focused Approach

  • Prioritize the safety and well‑being of passengers and crew at all times.
  • Exhibit professionalism both in train handling and interactions with the public.

What We Are Looking For

  • Qualified Locomotive Engineers or Train Conductors certified under the Canadian CROR
    – minimum 2 years of experience
  • Ability to work variable schedules
  • Willingness to be away from home frequently for work
  • Knowledge of the Central Ontario territory (Southwest, Central Ontario, and Québec) is an asset
  • High school diploma
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written)
