At VIA Rail Canada, our Maintenance Department, responsible for the upkeep and inspection of our trains, is evolving in a dynamic and innovative environment. With the arrival of our new fleet and the opening of our state-of-the-art maintenance center, we are undergoing a major transformation to modernize our operations and deliver an exceptional customer experience.

The Toronto Maintenance Centre is the heart of our operations, ensuring the reliability and performance of our trains to meet the needs of passengers across the country.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, the Supervisor, Mechanical Maintenance Operations will oversee skilled trades employees and general workers, as well as manage the daily operations of the equipment maintenance teams at the Toronto Maintenance Centre.

As a frontline leader, you will guide your team through exciting changes, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging work environment. You will play a key role in training and developing talent while ensuring the reliability and performance of our fleet.

Employee Management:

  • Lead and engage a unionized team with a coaching approach focused on talent development.
  • Plan and oversee daily maintenance activities in collaboration with the Lead Hand.
  • Foster a positive work environment and maintain strong relationships with employees, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in investigations in accordance with the collective agreement and proactively resolve conflicts.
  • Ensure transparent communication by sharing updates, best practices, and objectives.
  • Prepare accurate reports on delays, analyze root causes, and recommend solutions to improve performance.

Health and Safety:

  • Promote a culture of prevention and strictly enforce health and safety standards.
  • Ensure mandatory training is completed and strengthen compliance through regular observations.
  • Reduce risks related to safety, productivity, and environmental compliance.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Monitor performance objectives and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Act as a change agent and maintain collaborative relationships with teams and partners.

Quality and Performance:

  • Lead maintenance operations with a proactive, results-oriented approach.
  • Ensure train reliability by optimizing budget management (labor, overtime, materials).
  • Comply with company policies, quality standards, and performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Collaborate with planning, engineering, and quality teams to deliver operations on time and within budget.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and provide constructive feedback to strengthen quality.

 

Requirements

  • College diploma (DEC) or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience (mechanical, electrical).
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience, ideally in manufacturing or transportation.
  • Experience in a unionized environment (asset).
  • Knowledge of Transport Canada railway regulations (asset).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent command of English (French is an asset).
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills.
  • Managerial courage and ability to make strategic decisions.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and team spirit.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict management abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to a changing environment.
  • Results-oriented with a strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Availability for varied shifts and occasional travel.
